Red Wing 2024 begins on Thursday, July 25th at 8:00 AM at the Kum & Go on 1st Street in Ankeny. We’ll enjoy a relaxing drive on an entirely new route to Red Wing which takes us to NE Iowa with a lunch stop in West Union at a Greek family-owned restaurant that has been in continuous operation for over 50 years. The roads get interesting right after lunch as we enter SE Minnesota’s beautiful countryside.
Once again, we’re staying at the historic St James Hotel in downtown Red Wing for three nights where a 25-room block is set up under the “Schonesland Porsche Club”. You’ll need to make your reservations directly by clicking on this link. https://gettaroom.b4checkin.com/stjames/rlp/SchoneslandRegionPorscheClubGroupBlock or call the hotel at 651-388-2846. Thursday dinner will be a block away from the hotel at the Homeplate & Dugout Grill, where we’ll have the entire bar area to ourselves to eat and sip a cold one or two.
Day two, Friday, is relaxing day. There will be a short one-hour excursion to beautiful, historic Stillwater, MN, located on the banks of the St. Croix River. http://discoverstillwater.com Once one of the great lumbering capitals in the world, Stillwater was established years before Minneapolis and the process of statehood began here. The historic buildings here are truly a sight to behold, nestled between the huge bluffs that overlook this quaintly updated village. We’ll have lunch together at the Lowell Inn and have time before and after lunch for plenty of browsing, shopping and relaxing. After a short return to the Red Wing area later in the afternoon, we’ll have pub grub for dinner at the raucous Big Dog Daddy’s Roadhouse in Bay City, WI, 7 miles from the hotel. You’re gonna love this place.
Day three, Saturday, is driving day, starting with a delicious brunch at the Stockholm Pie Shop & General Store. http://stockholmpie.com Quiche, bagels, cream cheese, fruit, coffee and… PIE & ice cream (why not?!). After brunch we’ll drive on a patchwork of this region’s best roads, sewn together from the last two years’ routes and some new roads as well. They’ll lead us to Larry’s Lookout http://larryslookout.com later in the afternoon where we’ll stop for a beverage, while enjoying some incredible views from way up high in the bluffs, overlooking scenic valleys. Get a snack here if you wish, but don’t get too full because dinner aw aits 60 miles away in Bay City at the Chef Shack. http://chefshackbaycity.com This little gem has been operated for ten years by two ladies that were 2024 James Beard Award semi-finalists. This gorgeous, funky little restaurant will be entirely ours for the evening to enjoy with grilled meats and veggies, spuds and dessert. It promises to be a fitting way to put a bow on a memorable Schonesland weekend.
Sunday, July 28th everyone can return home on the route of their choice.
When you register you will be asked to prepay for Friday’s lunch in Stillwater and Saturday evening’s dinner at the Chef Shack.
See you in Red Wing!
